About this place

신갈 Catholic Parish belongs to the Giheung District of the First Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon and has Saint Columba Kim Hyo-im as its patron. The official Catholic directory also records the presence of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae. Within the urban life of Giheung-gu, Yongin, the parish serves the faithful through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, devotions, and fellowship, linking the Korean Catholic tradition of martyr faith represented by its patron with contemporary parish life and the collaboration of a religious community.

Today 신갈 Parish functions as an urban parish in a rapidly changing part of Giheung while preserving the memory of a long local Catholic presence. The church is a central place where Catholics of different generations and circumstances celebrate the liturgy and form community relationships, and it also serves as a pastoral point connected with the surrounding local Church. Visitors should therefore see not only the parish’s historical depth but also its present life as a community that continues sacramental worship, formation, and fellowship in Giheung under the patronage of Saint Columba Kim Hyo-im.

History & origins

Catholic life in the Singal area began in mission-station communities long before the establishment of the present parish. As parishes such as Wangnim, Mirinae, and Hauhyeon were established from the late nineteenth century onward, mission stations also appeared throughout Giheung, Suji, and Guseong. Singal was one of the communities that endured. When Jidong Parish was established in 1970, the Singal mission station came under its jurisdiction, and Sunday Mass and catechesis were sometimes held in rented local spaces for Catholics who found it difficult to travel to the parish church.

During the 1980s, rapid urbanization and population growth following the elevation of Giheung-myeon to an eup created a need for an independent parish. Jidong Parish formed a committee to prepare a Singal parish and set up a prefabricated temporary church. Official sources differ on the exact day but agree that Singal became a parish in early 1988, when the former mission station was transformed into an independent community serving roughly a thousand Catholics.

As the number of parishioners increased, the temporary building soon became too small. A full-scale project for a new church began in 1990. The community combined material preparation with spiritual efforts, including the offering of one million decades of the Rosary and a rice-sharing campaign. After years of preparation, the present church was dedicated in 2002. The new building represented the maturation of a community that had developed from a rural mission station into an urban parish.

Growth also led to further divisions. Parishes such as Suji, Jukjeon, Bora-dong Holy Family, and Sangha were established from territory once connected with Singal. The parish also opened its facilities for local cultural use and took part in charitable and resettlement-related activities. Its history thus shows a community that preserved the memory of older Catholic villages while continually adapting its pastoral reach to urban growth. The progression from a mission station to an urban parish and then to a mother parish from which several communities were separated clearly shows how demographic change in the Singal area was reflected in parish structures.
