About this place
Sillim Seongmo Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwanak District of the Archdiocese of Seoul, serving Catholics in Sillim-dong and nearby neighborhoods. It began in 1980 as the Bongcheon 1-dong mission station of Bongcheon-dong Parish and was elevated to parish status in 1981. Its patronal title is Queen of Martyrs. The current name was adopted in 2009 when local administrative district names changed, replacing the former name Bongcheon 1-dong Parish. Located near Bongcheon-ro, the parish is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, small-community life, devotion, and service.
The parish's identity combines its growth from a small mission station into an independent parish with the continuity of a community that survived a change of local name. At the time of elevation, Catholics were transferred from Bongcheon-dong, Sillim-dong, Sangdo-dong, and Daebang-dong parishes to form the new community, and the parish obtained its own church during the 1980s. The 2009 renaming did not create a new parish; it simply aligned the name of the existing Bongcheon 1-dong community with the changed administrative geography. Dedicated to the Queen of Martyrs, Sillim Seongmo Parish thus connects a long local memory with present-day pastoral life in the Gwanak area.
History & origins
The history of Sillim Seongmo Catholic Church began in September 1980 with the Bongcheon 1-dong mission station under Bongcheon-dong Parish. The mission community is reported to have had only about seventy Catholics at first. As the local population and Catholic community grew rapidly, the Archdiocese of Seoul elevated the mission to parish status in August 1981. A total of 1,810 Catholics from Bongcheon-dong, Sillim-dong, Sangdo-dong, and Daebang-dong parishes were incorporated into the new parish. It was then known as Bongcheon 1-dong Parish, transforming a small mission station into an independent pastoral community through a reorganization of several neighboring parish territories.
Soon after becoming independent, the parish began working toward a church of its own. Land was purchased in 1982, construction was pursued over the following years, and the new church was blessed in November 1987. The building became the center for Mass, sacraments, catechesis, apostolic associations, and small-community activity. As the surrounding Gwanak area became more densely populated and urbanized, the parish established itself as a pastoral center linking the Bongcheon and Sillim living areas.
In the 2000s, changes in civil administrative names were reflected in the parish name. After Gwanak-gu reorganized its administrative districts, the parish was renamed from Bongcheon 1-dong Catholic Church to Sillim Seongmo Catholic Church in August 2009. The name changed, but the community that began as a mission in 1980 and the church established in 1987 remained continuous. Its history is therefore one of a small mission becoming a parish, building its own church, and later adapting its name to a changed urban geography without losing its communal identity. Through these changes, the dedication to the Queen of Martyrs and the parish's local faith tradition have continued.
