About this place
Sincheon Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon located in Sincheon-dong, Siheung, and forms part of the diocese’s pastoral network in the Siheung–Ansan area. The official Korean Catholic directory identifies Saint Joseph the Worker as the parish patron and records the presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in parish ministry. Bearing the name of its neighborhood, the parish serves as a representative Catholic community for Sincheon-dong and the surrounding area.
The parish is a center where local Catholics gather around the Mass and the sacraments and remain connected through catechesis and communal life. Its dedication to Saint Joseph the Worker offers an important key to understanding a spirituality rooted in work, family, and ordinary daily life. History & origins
The official directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea records February 11, 1979, as the establishment date of Sincheon Parish. This marks the point at which the Catholic community in the Siheung area acquired an independent parish structure and provided the foundation for parish-centered pastoral care in Sincheon-dong and the surrounding districts.
The parish’s history was not confined to its local neighborhood. In 1993, then-pastor Father Lee Yong-gil visited the Catholic community in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, China, to learn about the situation of ethnic Korean Catholics there. The Catholic Times reported that he visited churches in several Chinese cities and expressed his intention to help address the urgent need for a church building in Mudanjiang.
This episode shows a period in which Sincheon Parish, while serving its local faithful, also shared concern and solidarity with Korean and ethnic Korean Catholic communities beyond Korea. The present parish continues as the Catholic community of the Siheung area upon this accumulated history.
