About this place
Daeya Seongche Catholic Church is the church of Daeya Seongche Parish in the Siheung-Ansan district of the Diocese of Incheon. It is where Catholics in Daeya-dong and the surrounding area gather for Mass and the sacraments and sustain their life of faith. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the parish as having been established in 1992 and gives "the Eucharist" as its patronal dedication. The parish's present official name, centered explicitly on the Eucharist, expresses the identity of a community gathered and formed through the Church's liturgy.
Northern Siheung has undergone rapid urbanization and residential change within the greater Seoul metropolitan area, and the parish took shape as an independent local community within that changing environment. Today the church provides the central space for liturgy, catechesis, fellowship, and service. Its significance lies less in being an old historical monument than in being a living parish church formed through urban growth and continuing to support the ordinary faith of local Catholics.
History & origins
The Daeya area was originally served within the broad territory of Sincheon Parish. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Sincheon Parish, continuing development and growth in the number of Catholics led to the separation of Daeya-dong Parish in 1992, when 696 households and 2,009 registered Catholics were transferred to the new parish. The current Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records the establishment date of the independent parish as September 14, 1992.
The division was more than an administrative adjustment. It created a new pastoral base so that Catholics in the growing Siheung area could participate more consistently in Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis within their own residential area. Urbanization and Catholic population changes continued, as Sincheon Parish later also gave rise to Podong and Dochang-dong Parishes, while the Daeya community settled into life as an independent parish.
Early sources use the name "Daeya-dong Parish," whereas the current official directory lists the parish as "Daeya Seongche." No primary source confirming the exact date and procedure of that later name change was secured in this research, so no date is asserted for it. The historical continuity itself is clear, however: the community separated from Sincheon Parish in 1992 and continues today as Daeya Seongche Parish.
