About this place

The Sisters of Jesus Kkottongnae community in Sinnae-dong is the congregation’s “Seoul Branch.” It is not a parish but a local community of women religious who continue common life, prayer, and an apostolate of care. The branch is connected with the service that Kkottongnae has developed in the Sinnae area of Seoul.

The Sisters of Jesus Kkottongnae describe their vocation as bringing the love of Christ to people who have nowhere to rely on and who lack even the strength to obtain food for themselves. The Sinnae-dong Seoul Branch is significant as a religious community that lives this spirituality in an urban setting, remaining close to people in need through service and communal prayer.

History & origins

The Sisters of Jesus Kkottongnae were founded on September 8, 1986, by Father Oh Woong-jin and received diocesan approval in December of the same year. The first professions followed in 1988, giving the religious community a firmer institutional foundation. Its growth developed together with Kkottongnae’s mission of living close to people who need care.

A direct connection with the Sinnae area of Seoul appears in the record that Kkottongnae sisters were sent to the Sinnae nursing home for the elderly on September 25, 2000. Kkottongnae’s official history also records the blessing of the Sinnae nursing home in 2002, showing that the sisters’ apostolate of care had become established in the area by the early 2000s.

Today, the Sisters of Jesus Kkottongnae have a “Seoul Branch” in Sinnae-dong. The beginning of the nursing-home apostolate cannot automatically be treated as the opening date of the present branch building, but the sisters’ activity in the Sinnae area is documented from 2000 onward. The present Seoul Branch can therefore be understood as a religious community formed within this history of local apostolic service.
