History & origins

The mission of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus in Korea began on October 19, 1956, when three missionary sisters arrived in Gwangju. As the communities and apostolates grew, the congregation also needed a distinct setting for formation and for accompanying those preparing to enter religious life.

According to the congregation’s official chronology, the “support house” was separated from the motherhouse and began as an independent community in January 1982. In 1983 it temporarily moved together with the motherhouse, and in 1984 both the new motherhouse and support house relocated again. This does not mean that the present Bangbae-dong support house has occupied the same building since 1982; rather, it shows that a distinct support-house community function emerged within the congregation and moved locations over time.

Today, the Sisters of Charity of Jesus support house is located in Bangbae-dong. The available chronology does not establish the exact date when it moved to Bangbae-dong, but it does show a historical line from the support-house community begun in 1982 to the community registered there today.
