About this place

The Korean Branch of the Fraternity of the Little Sisters of Jesus is a women’s religious community located at 13-4 Galhyeon-ro 5-gil, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists this address not merely as a local house but as the representative address of the “Korean Branch,” confirming the Sinsa-dong community as the institute’s branch center in Korea.

The fraternity is described as a community founded by Little Sister Magdeleine under the inspiration of the life and spirit of Charles de Foucauld. The Catholic Encyclopedia describes the Little Sisters’ distinctive way of living contemplatively close to poor people and workers, witnessing to Christ’s presence through ordinary life. The Sinsa-dong Korean Branch is a present center of that religious tradition in Korea.

History & origins

The Fraternity of the Little Sisters of Jesus was founded on September 8, 1939, and entered Korea on June 1, 1955. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that two sisters came to Korea and began serving people facing hardship in the difficult period after the Korean War.

The community expanded its presence by entering Seoul in 1957 and settling in Hyehwa-dong the following year. Over time, the Little Sisters formed communities in various places, living close to workers and neighbors experiencing poverty.

Today, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Sinsa-dong in Eunpyeong-gu as the representative address of the Korean Branch. The available chronology does not establish the exact date when the branch center moved from Hyehwa-dong to the present Sinsa-dong location, but it does show a clear continuity from the early Seoul settlement to today’s Korean Branch.
