History & origins

Records of Congregatio Jesu’s spiritual apostolate and formation activity in Oryu-dong predate the establishment of the present name “Spirituality Center.” In 2011, a gathering on Ignatian spirituality and vocation discernment was held at the Oryu-dong convent, showing that the site was already being used for spiritual programs alongside the common life of the sisters.

A 2014 record concerning the congregation refers to the community at the present address as the “Seoul Branch novitiate chapel” and records a profession ceremony there. This shows that Oryu-dong functioned as a place for religious formation and prayer, and helps explain how internal formation of the religious community and spiritual ministry for the faithful developed in close relationship at the site.

Today, the “Congregatio Jesu Spirituality Center” occupies the same site and functions as an education and retreat house. The available evidence does not establish the center’s exact opening date or the timing of its name changes, but it does confirm a connection between the Ignatian programs and formation documented in Oryu-dong since the early 2010s and the spirituality center that exists there today.
