About this place

The Jesuit house in Muak-dong is registered in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory as “Hanmom Community,” located at 16-5 Tongil-ro 12-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The history of the Jesuits in Korea explicitly identifies Hanmom as a social pastoral community, giving the house a character that joins religious community life with social apostolate.

The Korean Province’s present commitment to “walking with the excluded” and to a mission of reconciliation and justice closely corresponds to this social pastoral identity. Hanmom is therefore significant not simply as a Jesuit residence, but as a community shaped by the practice of Gospel companionship within concrete social realities.

History & origins

Hanmom Community began during a period when the social apostolate of the Jesuits in Korea was taking organized communal form. The Korean Province chronology published by the Sogang University Alumni Association records that in 1991 “Hanmom Community, a social pastoral community,” was established.

The current Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Hanmom Community at 16-5 Tongil-ro 12-gil in Muak-dong, Jongno-gu. The documented social pastoral identity at its founding and the continued existence of the community today show Hanmom as one of the communities that embodies the history of the Jesuit social apostolate in Korea.

The published chronology does not establish the exact address of the community in 1991 or the date it moved into the present Muak-dong building. Accordingly, 1991 is not treated as the construction or occupancy date of the current property.
