History & origins

Arrupe Community was established as the Jesuits in Korea expanded their communities in Seoul after developing into an independent region. The Korean Province chronology published by the Sogang University Alumni Association records that Arrupe Community was founded in Mapo, Seoul, in 1999.

The same chronology notes that the headquarters of the Korean Jesuit region and a vocation-support building were newly constructed in Mapo that year, showing how the area was becoming an important center of Jesuit organization and community life in Korea.

The current Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Arrupe Community at 11-8 Seogangdae-gil, Mapo-gu. The 1999 record of its establishment in Mapo and the present Sinsu-dong address therefore identify it as a Jesuit community with continuity in the Mapo area since the late 1990s.
