Religious house
About this place
The Jesuit house in Daejo-dong is registered in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory as “St. John Berchmans House.” Located at 6-5 Yeonseo-ro 20-gil, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, it is a distinct Jesuit community, separate from Xavier Community and St. Alberto Hurtado Community elsewhere in the same district.
The house bears the name of the Jesuit saint John Berchmans. As the Korean Province highlights walking with young people and the Spiritual Exercises and discernment among its present apostolic preferences, this house is one of the religious communities sustaining Jesuit common life in northwestern Seoul.
History & origins
St. John Berchmans House emerged as the Jesuits in Korea expanded their community base in Seoul again in the late 2010s. The Korean Province chronology published by the Sogang University Alumni Association records that “St. John Berchmans House” was established in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, in 2018.
The current Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists a community of the same name at 6-5 Yeonseo-ro 20-gil in Daejo-dong, Eunpyeong-gu. Because the recorded district, present address, and community name correspond, the site can be identified as the St. John Berchmans House established in 2018.
No separate relocation record was found in the public sources, so a more specific construction or occupancy date is not supplied without further evidence.
