Religious house
About this place
The Jesuit community in Pyeongchang-dong is a male religious community of the Archdiocese of Seoul registered under the additional name “St. Ignatius House.” The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory gives 310-6 Pyeongchang-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul as its representative address and confirms that it is a residential Jesuit community.
Bearing the name of St. Ignatius, this house is one of several Jesuit religious communities in Seoul. The Korean Province today places the Spiritual Exercises and discernment among its important apostolic preferences, creating a natural connection between the house’s name and the province’s present spiritual orientation.
History & origins
As the Jesuits in Korea developed into a province and expanded their communities in Seoul, St. Ignatius House was established in Pyeongchang-dong. The Korean Province chronology published by the Sogang University Alumni Association records that the blessing of “St. Ignatius House” took place in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul, in 2009.
The current Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists a community of the same name at 310-6 Pyeongchang-gil, Jongno-gu. Because the 2009 blessing in Pyeongchang-dong and the present name and address correspond, the site can be traced as a Jesuit community known as St. Ignatius House from at least 2009.
