History & origins

The history of the Sogang University Community is connected with the establishment of the Jesuit educational apostolate in Sinsu-dong. According to the official chronology of the Sogang University Foundation, the Jesuits prepared to establish a university at the request of the Catholic Church in Korea and with papal approval, and purchased a campus site in Sinsu-dong, Mapo-gu, in 1957.

The main building was erected and an application for university authorization was submitted in 1959. In 1960, Sogang College received authorization and opened, subsequently developing within the Jesuit educational tradition.

Today, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory registers the Jesuit community at 35 Baekbeom-ro as the “Sogang University Community.” Because the public sources do not give a separate founding date for the community itself, 1960 is not asserted as its foundation date; rather, the university’s establishment is presented as the historical context in which the present community exists.
