About this place

The Jesuit house in Hapjeong-dong is registered in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory as the “Saeeol Community.” It is located at 32-32 Seongji 1-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and is one of the residential Jesuit communities within the Archdiocese of Seoul.

The Korean Province of the Society of Jesus identifies the Spiritual Exercises and discernment, walking with the excluded, accompanying young people, and caring for our common home as central apostolic directions today. Saeeol Community is significant as a base of common religious life for Jesuits engaged in these varied apostolates.

History & origins

In the early 2000s, as the Jesuits in Korea approached elevation to provincial status, they reorganized and expanded several apostolic communities. A chronology of the Korean Province published by the Sogang University Alumni Association records that a blessing ceremony for Saeeol Community was held in 2003.

The current Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Saeeol Community at 32-32 Seongji 1-gil in Hapjeong-dong, Mapo-gu. The 2003 blessing and today’s Hapjeong-dong community can therefore be linked, showing Saeeol Community as part of the expansion of Jesuit communal life in Korea during the 2000s.
