About this place

The Congregatio Jesu community in Oryu-dong is known as the “Seoul Branch.” The Congregatio Jesu Spirituality Center is also located at the same site, making this site a place where the common life of the sisters and the congregation’s spiritual apostolate are closely connected.

Congregatio Jesu, founded by Mary Ward, is rooted in Ignatian spirituality and continues ministries of education, spiritual accompaniment, retreats, and the Spiritual Exercises. The Oryu-dong Seoul Branch is significant as a place where religious common life has supported vocation discernment, formation, and spiritual ministry over time.

History & origins

Congregatio Jesu entered Korea on June 10, 1964. As its communities and apostolates developed in Korea, Oryu-dong became one of the places connected with the congregation’s formation and spiritual activity, with clear documentary evidence from at least the early 2010s.

A 2011 vocation notice published through Catholic GoodNews shows that a program on Ignatian spirituality and vocation discernment was held at the Oryu-dong convent. A 2014 article concerning the congregation refers to the community at the present address as the “Seoul Branch novitiate chapel” and records a profession ceremony there. These records show that Oryu-dong functioned not simply as a residence but as a place for religious formation and prayer.

Today, the official directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea lists the site as the Congregatio Jesu “Seoul Branch,” and a spirituality center is also registered at the same address. The available sources do not justify assigning an exact opening date to the branch, but they do confirm that community life and Ignatian formation and ministry were already established in Oryu-dong by at least 2011.
