History & origins

Yeonsinnae Parish was established in 2003 after being separated from Bulgwang-dong Parish as the Catholic population and parish boundaries of the Eunpyeong area were reorganized. Current information from the Archdiocese of Seoul records September 4, 2003, as the date of establishment. The newly created community needed both to organize its own liturgical and pastoral life and to prepare a permanent church.

Over the next few years the parish pursued the construction of a new church. On September 10, 2006, a dedication ceremony for the new church at the present location was celebrated with Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk presiding. Catholic Church press from the time likewise records that Yeonsinnae had been separated from Bulgwang-dong Parish in 2003 before establishing the new church.

Unlike parishes that developed over many decades from an old mission station, the early history of Yeonsinnae is concentrated in the rapid creation of a new parish and the construction of an independent church in response to changes in population and Catholic life in northwestern Seoul. The parish then settled into its role as one of the communities of the Eunpyeong District.
