About this place
Yeongdeungpo-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Fifteenth Yeongdeungpo–Geumcheon District in the Western Seoul Region of the Archdiocese of Seoul. Its patronal title is the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Situated in one of Yeongdeungpo’s long-established urban neighborhoods, it is a local parish where Catholics share the Word, the sacraments, prayer, and community life.
The patronal feast, which recalls Mary’s offering of herself to God, provides a key to understanding the spiritual orientation of the community. A local parish helps the faithful entrust themselves to God and share their faith with neighbors in ordinary life. In a rapidly changing urban environment, Yeongdeungpo-dong Parish continues to serve as a center for this form of Catholic community life.
History & origins
The present Yeongdeungpo-dong Parish was established on May 3, 1973. The name “Yeongdeungpo Parish,” however, also appears much earlier in the Catholic history of the area, so the beginning of the present parish should be distinguished from the older Catholic history of Yeongdeungpo.
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia’s entry on Dangsan-dong Parish, a parish was established in the Yeongdeungpo area in 1936, but its church and parish center were moved to Dorim-dong in 1939. As the city expanded after the Korean War, Dangsan-dong Parish was established independently in 1957, and Yeongdeungpo-dong Parish was separated from Dangsan-dong in May 1973.
The present Yeongdeungpo-dong Parish is therefore more accurately understood not as a simple administrative continuation of the earlier “Yeongdeungpo Parish” of the 1930s, but as a new community formed from Dangsan-dong Parish amid postwar population and Catholic growth. This separation reflects the broader development of new parish communities close to expanding residential areas in southwestern Seoul.
