History & origins

The Journey Bible apostolate grew out of the series “A Journey into the World of the Bible,” published in the Sisters of Charity of Jesus magazine Saenghwal Seongseo, and the textbook Journey that developed from it. Using this material, the congregation began systematic Bible education in 1985. Its method followed the broad flow of Scripture and encouraged participants to connect the Word with their lives; over time the program spread to multiple regions and parishes.

The apostolate developed beyond education for individual students into the formation of lay ministers of the Word. Official records of the congregation show that a Journey apostolate gathering was held at the Bangbae Bible Education Center in 2007, and the center subsequently became a base for Journey Bible education and volunteer formation in the Seoul area.

The word “Journey” reflects an educational approach that does not present biblical knowledge as isolated facts but follows the Old and New Testaments within one history of salvation. As the program continued, it expanded into an apostolate combining textbooks and lectures with volunteer formation, retreats, training and special courses, and the Bangbae center became a place where these activities could be gathered.

In 2025, a 40th-anniversary celebration for Journey Bible education was held at the Yeojong Bible Education Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The congregation and volunteers looked back on four decades of biblical education and renewed the mission not only to study the Word but also to form people who would proclaim and teach it in the Church. The history of the center is therefore best understood not simply as a chronology of one building, but within the wider development of Journey Bible education since 1985—from a study program into a network of lay formation and biblical pastoral ministry serving parishes and dioceses.
