History & origins

Yangjae 2-dong Parish was established on August 22, 1990, after being separated from Yangjae-dong Parish as the Catholic population of the Gangnam and Seocho area continued to grow. This was the year in which the mother parish marked its 25th anniversary, and historical Church records refer to the new community at the time as Poidong Parish. The parish began on a site of about 430 pyeong with two temporary buildings. Without a permanent church, parishioners and clergy had to arrange spaces for liturgy and formation while preparing over the long term for a proper church building.

That process continued for more than a decade. As the community grew, it prepared for construction and in September 2003 reached the stage of blessing and dedicating its new church. Catholic Church records state that the dedication of the new church was celebrated on September 21, 2003.

The new church was planned to harmonize with the surrounding residential neighborhood, and the parish’s image of the “Ark of Salvation” was carried into both its architecture and communal symbolism. The move from temporary buildings to a permanent church after years of preparation shows how Yangjae 2-dong Parish grew together with its local community.

Its path from temporary facilities to an independent church building also reflects a broader feature of the Church in Seoul during the 1990s, when rapid urbanization in Gangnam and Seocho led newly created parishes to establish their own permanent places of worship.
