About this place

Yangcheon Parish belongs to the 18th Yangcheon District in the western Seoul region of the Archdiocese of Seoul and has Saint John Chrysostom as its patron. It is one of the Catholic parishes of Yangcheon-gu and serves as a community in which Catholics around Sinjeong-dong gather for Mass and the sacraments, faith formation and parish life.

The community has also extended its activity beyond liturgical life inside the church by maintaining service to neighbors in need. In particular, the parish’s charitable association follows the spirit of Saint Vincent de Paul by supporting vulnerable households and welfare facilities and by working with local social-welfare networks when emergency assistance is needed. This service shows Yangcheon Parish as a community in which faith and care for neighbors are practiced together.

After establishing an independent community and permanent church in the 2000s, Yangcheon Parish developed both its internal liturgical and formation life and its charitable service to the surrounding area. Records of the parish charity group working with local welfare organizations and broadening its support show how a relatively young urban parish has widened its pastoral reach through relationships with the local community.

History & origins

Yangcheon Parish was established in the Archdiocese of Seoul on September 7, 2000. As the Catholic population in the Yangcheon-gu area grew, the boundaries of neighboring parishes were adjusted to form a new community. The historical record of Sinjeong-dong Parish states that, in the process of creating Yangcheon Parish together with Gocheok-dong and Mokdong parishes, 783 households comprising 2,100 Catholics were transferred. The creation of the new parish was part of a broader effort to adapt parish boundaries to residential development and population growth around Mokdong and Sinjeong-dong.

After its establishment, the community worked to secure a permanent church of its own, and construction was completed in September 2007. Once the physical foundation of the parish was in place, its relationship with the surrounding community broadened. After discussing the need for an organization that could care continuously for vulnerable neighbors in its territory, the parish founded its charitable association on March 31, 2013.

The association expanded its work from regular support to emergency assistance for families in crisis, cooperation with local welfare organizations and aid to social-service facilities. This sequence—from establishing the parish, to completing the church, and then organizing sustained charitable ministry—shows how Yangcheon first built the foundations of a liturgical community and then widened its pastoral reach into the local neighborhood.

The parish’s history is therefore characteristic of a relatively young community formed in a planned residential area: it established an independent parish structure, built its church, and then developed ties with the local welfare network as its ministry matured.
