History & origins

The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception were founded by Carmen Sallés in Burgos, Spain, on December 7, 1892. From the beginning, education for children and young people was central to the congregation’s mission, which later expanded through missionary communities in several countries.

The congregation’s presence in Korea began on April 12, 1984, when three sisters arrived at the invitation of Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. They established their first Korean community in Bulgwang-dong in 1985 and began educational ministry there. As Korean vocations increased, a separate place for formation became necessary.

In June 1989, the sisters established a novitiate in Jeongneung, using it for member formation and also as a residence for female university students. The ministries in Jeongneung later evolved with changing educational and social needs, and the site now continues as the Asia Province headquarters and Jeongneung community.
