History & origins

According to the parish’s 30-year history, Wolgye-dong Parish was established on September 24, 1992 after being separated from Jangwi-dong and Seokgwan-dong parishes. It initially served Wolgye 1, 2, and 3-dong with 4,872 Catholics, and its first pastor, Father Alphonsus Song Jae-nam, arrived the following month.

The community developed quickly. In 1993 the parish religious-education program celebrated its first Mass, while the official history of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus records that sisters were assigned to Wolgye-dong Parish in February 1993. This independent record confirms that the parish was already active in the early 1990s.

The parish later pursued construction of a new church. A topping-out commemorative Mass was held in 2005, completion approval was received in September 2006, and Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk presided at the parish dedication Mass on November 5, 2006. Although some current directories display 1997 as the establishment year, the parish’s own 30-year history and the 1993 religious-order record clearly support the 1992 foundation date.
