History & origins

Wolgok-dong Parish began in September 1968 when it was separated from Mia-dong Parish. The parish’s official history records September 24 as the establishment date and notes that a temporary church was prepared in October before the community celebrated its first Mass. The current Bishops’ Conference directory gives September 23, a one-day discrepancy, so the public narrative here uses “September 1968.”

Soon after its establishment, the community secured land for a church and celebrated the groundbreaking Mass on March 30, 1969. The new church was blessed on November 9 of that year, giving the young parish a permanent worship space.

As the Catholic population grew, the limitations of the original church and its auxiliary facilities became increasingly apparent. Preparations for another church building began in the late 1980s, construction proceeded in 1993, and a new church was dedicated in May 1994 with Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan presiding. This sequence reflects how the parish expanded its physical space as the local Catholic community grew.
