About this place
Wirye Assumption of Mary Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul at 470 Wirye Sunhwan-ro, Songpa-gu, serving the Catholic community of the Wirye New Town area. Its name and patronage clearly express devotion to the Assumption of Mary, and it serves not only through the Mass and sacraments but also as a center of Marian spirituality.
The church has also been designated a Marian pilgrimage church with a spiritual bond to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. It therefore combines the ordinary role of a territorial parish with a wider role as a place of pilgrimage and prayer for Catholics seeking to deepen Marian devotion.
History & origins
Wirye Assumption of Mary Parish was established on August 18, 2017 in response to the growth of Wirye New Town. It was separated from Munjeong-dong Parish to serve the new local Catholic community, and work then proceeded toward securing a permanent church.
Parishioners prepared for the construction through spiritual offerings such as the Rosary and Bible copying. The new church was dedicated on October 18, 2020, marking a major transition from the early stage of the new parish to a permanent liturgical home.
Building on its patronal identity of the Assumption of Mary, the parish then sought designation as a Marian pilgrimage church. Vatican approval was received in 2021, establishing a spiritual bond with the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. The designation added a pilgrimage ministry to the parish’s local pastoral mission.
