History & origins

Umyeon-dong Parish was established on June 1, 2001, after being separated from Yangjae-dong Parish. The new parish was created as residential development and the Catholic population grew in the Umyeon-dong area, making a division of the larger Yangjae parish necessary.

When Umyeon-dong became independent, its mother parish, Yangjae-dong, provided 3 billion won to support construction of the new parish church. This is recorded as more than an administrative division: the mother parish shared financial resources so that the new community could establish its own church and pastoral base.

The creation of Umyeon-dong Parish reflects the wider pattern by which the Archdiocese of Seoul divided expanding parishes into more local communities during the rapid development of Gangnam and Seocho. The present parish grew from this separation and the effort to establish an independent church base.
