About this place

The Ui-dong House of Meditation is a retreat and spirituality center of the Passionists, located on the slopes of Bukhansan in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul. It is not a territorial parish but a place where individuals and groups deepen their faith through prayer, silence, and retreats.

Rooted in Passionist spirituality, the house has long provided a retreat setting for Catholics from Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan area. After a major renewal of its facilities, it has continued to serve as a place of prayer and spiritual rest, with a chapel on the first floor commemorating the 300th anniversary of the congregation.

History & origins

The Passionists established a dedicated retreat facility in Ui-dong in 1977. At the time, the Catholic Times reported that the “House of Meditation” was completed after about a year of construction and was blessed in a ceremony attended by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan and other Church leaders.

Later reporting explains that the Passionists moved their earlier retreat house from Segeomjeong to Ui-dong and developed the site into one of the important retreat venues serving Seoul and the metropolitan area. After more than four decades of retreats and formation programs for parishes and groups, the facilities naturally required substantial renewal.

Following major renovation, the house reopened in 2020. Guest rooms and heating and cooling systems were improved, and a chapel commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Passionists was created on the first floor. This history shows a retreat center founded in the 1970s being renewed for contemporary use while continuing its original spiritual ministry.
