About this place

The Hannam-dong address in the package is identified in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory as the Hangangjin Community of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, Daegu Priory. Although it is located in Seoul, it belongs to the Daegu Priory rather than to the Seoul Priory of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters.

It is a women’s religious community where sisters live and pray together, not a territorial parish responsible for the Catholic population of a defined neighborhood. The key point for understanding the place is therefore its precise identity as the Daegu Priory’s Hangangjin community in Seoul, with the character of a religious house and chapel rather than a parish facility.

History & origins

The Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing were founded on September 24, 1885, and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records their arrival in Korea on November 21, 1925. The community’s development in Korea was centered on the Daegu Priory, and official records state that the Seoul Priory was separated from the Daegu Priory in 1987.

The present Hangangjin community in Hannam-dong, however, is not listed under the Seoul Priory; it remains separately registered as the Hangangjin community of the Daegu Priory. This distinction shows why the 1987 separation of the priories must not be confused with the history of an individual local community.

The official public sources reviewed here do not give the establishment date of the Hangangjin community itself, so neither the Order’s arrival in Korea nor the separation of the Seoul Priory is presented as its local foundation date.
