About this place
Taereung Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul in the 5th Nowon District of the central Seoul pastoral region and serves all of Gongneung 2-dong. With the Holy Family as its patron, it provides liturgy, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life for local Catholics in the Gongneung area, a neighborhood marked by historic and cultural landscapes such as Taereung and Hwarangdae.
On its official website, the parish describes itself as a community that receives the word of God and prays amid the cultural heritage of the Gongneung area. Though it is a relatively recent parish, it is a fully established territorial parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul with its own church and pastoral community.
History & origins
The formation of Taereung Parish took concrete shape with the purchase of the church site on December 29, 2001. A groundbreaking ceremony followed on April 20, 2003.
On September 9, 2004, all of Gongneung 2-dong was separated from Gongneung-dong Parish and a new parish was established under the name Gongneung 2-dong. The church building was completed on November 12 of the same year, and on November 25 the parish name was changed from Gongneung 2-dong to Taereung.
The church was solemnly consecrated on September 9, 2007 in a Mass presided over by Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk. Because the official parish chronology records the sequence of land purchase, construction, parish separation, renaming, and consecration, Taereung provides a relatively clear example of a parish deliberately established in response to the growth of Gongneung 2-dong in the early 2000s.
