History & origins

The prehistory of Suyu-dong Catholic Church begins with catechetical work in the Suyu area in the early 1960s. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that a catechetical facility was established there in 1963 and that Sunday Mass began in a temporary chapel in 1965, drawing Catholics from nearby Mia-dong Parish. A priest's residence was prepared in 1966, and the community became an independent parish after separation from Mia-dong in April 1967. The current directory gives April 10 as the foundation date, while the Encyclopedia gives April 7, so the most secure wording is that the parish was founded in April 1967.

The parish then expanded its church and pastoral facilities to meet the rapid population growth of northern Seoul. In the late 1970s it invited the Inbo Sisters to assist in ministry, and from 1980 it undertook a major church renovation, completing an enlarged church in 1981. At the same time, the number of Catholics in the territory continued to rise. In 1983 the parish separated Suyu 1-dong and Beon-dong parishes, helping new local communities begin independent life; it later also influenced the formation of other neighboring parishes.

A major fire in 1986 caused serious damage, but parishioners worked together to restore and rebuild the church. This episode remains an important expression of the community's cohesion. In 1998 the parish also took on a district leadership role. The journey from a modest catechetical center to an independent parish, an enlarged church, and a mother parish for several daughter communities reflects both the urban growth of Gangbuk in the 1960s–1980s and the expansion of Catholic pastoral care. The succession of parish separations shows that Suyu-dong did not merely grow inwardly; it repeatedly sent out new communities across the wider Gangbuk area.
