History & origins

Suraksan Catholic Church was established as a new parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul in September 1997. The current Catholic directory gives September 26, 1997 as its foundation date and identifies St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron. The parish took root as a local Catholic community serving the residential area near Suraksan in Sanggye-dong, Nowon-gu, providing the Mass, sacraments, and catechesis. Available official and Church sources do not provide a sufficiently reliable detailed chronology of the original territorial division or church construction, so unverified claims about a mother parish or completion date are best omitted.

One clearly documented feature of the parish's later history is its relationship with its patron saint. St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr, shapes the spiritual identity of the community regardless of the parish's geographical name. In 2020, as the Archdiocese prepared to celebrate the bicentenary of his birth, Suraksan was designated as a jubilee pilgrimage church. This allowed the parish to serve not only local residents but also Catholics from across the Archdiocese who came to reflect on the saint's life and martyrdom.

Suraksan is a relatively young parish, founded in a northeastern Seoul residential district in the late 1990s. It has since continued its liturgical, educational, and community life and become rooted in northern Sanggye-dong.
