About this place

Sugung-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul serving Catholics in Gung-dong, Sugung-dong, and the surrounding area of Guro-gu. The current Catholic directory records its establishment in 1994, and the parish patron is the Holy Trinity. Located on Ori-ro, the church stands in a southwestern Seoul residential area that also includes schools and serves as a center for catechesis, small Christian communities, devotional life, and service.

The parish was separated from Oryu-dong Parish so that pastoral care could be provided more closely within what had been a broad territory. Since its foundation, the community has continued activities for both parishioners and local residents; recent records also show parish volunteers participating in aid for vulnerable neighbors. Parish boundaries have been adjusted as neighborhoods and residential patterns changed, demonstrating that Sugung-dong has adapted its pastoral territory to local realities rather than simply preserving a fixed line on a map. The Holy Trinity, its patron, also offers a spiritual image of different members becoming one community.

History & origins

Sugung-dong Catholic Church became an independent parish in 1994 after being separated from Oryu-dong Parish. The current Catholic directory records August 26, 1994 as the foundation date, while the Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Oryu-dong states that Sugung-dong was separated on September 9. The exact day therefore differs between the sources, but both confirm that the new parish emerged from Oryu-dong in the latter half of 1994. The community took the Holy Trinity as its patron and assumed independent pastoral responsibility for Gung-dong and the Sugung-dong area.

The foundation belonged to a broader process of adjusting large parish territories as the residential districts of southwestern Seoul expanded. After becoming independent, Sugung-dong established itself through the Mass and sacraments, catechesis, and neighborhood communities. As local conditions continued to change, boundaries between nearby parishes were also revised. A 2023 Archdiocese of Seoul boundary adjustment records that some areas formerly belonging to Oryu-dong were transferred to Sugung-dong.

Recent records show that the parish's role has extended beyond liturgy. Materials from Caritas Seoul document parish volunteer activity assisting people in need in the local community. Such work shows how the original goal of bringing pastoral care closer to residents developed into forms of social service as well. Although the exact foundation date remains inconsistent in the records, the larger sequence is clear: Sugung-dong was separated from Oryu-dong in 1994 and became established as a local Catholic community. The Holy Trinity as patron also gives spiritual meaning to the administrative act of separation by emphasizing the unity that the new parish was called to build among its members.
