Retreat center
About this place
Seton Spirituality Center is a Catholic spirituality and retreat center operated by the Sisters of Charity of Seton in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul. The Archdiocese of Seoul directory classifies it as an education and retreat facility and identifies the Sisters of Charity of Seton as the community responsible for it. Rather than being a territorial parish church, its essential character is that of a religious congregation’s apostolic space welcoming people for retreats, prayer, and spiritual reflection.
The congregation lists a school of prayer, family spirituality lectures, retreats, and psychological counseling among the center’s ministries. Archdiocesan material likewise explains that the term “spirituality center” was chosen because the place encompasses not only retreats but also prayer, spiritual lectures, counseling, and family programs. Through these activities, the Seton Spirituality Center serves as a place where the spirituality and caring spirit of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton are shared.
History & origins
Seton Spirituality Center was opened by the Sisters of Charity of Seton in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul, in 2013. A ministry page posted by the congregation on March 26, 2013 already presents “Seton Spirituality Center” as a distinct apostolate responsible for a school of prayer, family spirituality lectures, retreats, and psychological counseling. This shows that from its beginning the center aimed at a broader form of spiritual care than a retreat house focused mainly on accommodation.
A later introduction on the Archdiocese of Seoul’s GoodNews service explains that the Sisters opened the center in Seongbuk-dong in 2013 and chose the name “spirituality center” to express a wider purpose than the term “retreat house.” The name reflected a program that brought together retreats and prayer with psychological counseling, spiritual lectures, and activities for families.
The center’s work is linked to the spirituality of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, whom the congregation follows. Since its opening in 2013, the center has continued to combine prayer, retreats, family spirituality, and counseling in one setting, becoming an apostolic space in Seoul through which the sisters share their spirituality with lay people and families.
