History & origins

The establishment of Songpa-dong Catholic Church began with a pastoral response to population growth and expanding parishes in southeastern Seoul around 2000. The Tenth District and the Archdiocese of Seoul decided to separate parts of Sincheon-dong and Garak-dong parishes, transferring about 3,000 Catholics in more than 1,000 households to form the new community. The current Catholic directory gives September 7, 2000 as the foundation date. The parish's own twenty-fifth-anniversary history is internally inconsistent as well: its narrative records an official establishment approval on September 19, while its parish-status table lists September 29 as the foundation date. The most secure formulation is therefore that the parish was established in September 2000.

The new parish took St. Joseph as its patron and began independent liturgical and pastoral life. A notice from the time records that the first Mass in the church was celebrated on November 5, 2000, showing how quickly the community gathered around a worship space after its establishment. Parishioners then developed the church and related facilities while organizing catechesis, neighborhood groups, and apostolic associations in stages. The existing building was renovated over several years for parish use, and in May 2005 the church was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk.

The parish's history published in 2025 presents the foundation itself as a story of a community built together by local Catholics. Songpa-dong also illustrates an important pastoral pattern of the Archdiocese in the early 2000s: dividing large parishes in fast-growing residential districts so that new communities could be formed closer to everyday life. As facilities and parish organizations developed, Catholics who had come from several earlier communities gradually rooted themselves as one local parish. St. Joseph, the patron, symbolizes the protection and care that the parish seeks to embody in a residential area centered on family life and has provided a shared point of identity since the foundation.
