History & origins

The history of Songcheon-dong Catholic Church begins in August 1982. The Archdiocese of Seoul separated part of the territory of Mia 3-dong Parish and established Mia 5-dong Parish, and the new community began its ministry in a building near the present church. The parish name at the time followed the administrative neighborhood, “Mia 5-dong.” As the community grew, it worked toward a church of its own. A new church site was secured in 1989, and construction began in 1990.

The new church passed its completion inspection in August 1992 and was dedicated that November in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. It then became the center for the parish's liturgy, sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. The parish name later changed along with the surrounding civic district. After Mia 5-dong was renamed Songcheon-dong, the parish officially adopted the name “Songcheon-dong Catholic Church” in 2009, bringing the ecclesial name into line with the neighborhood's current name.

Around the parish's thirtieth anniversary, a major renovation was undertaken to improve the aging church. Work began in 2012, renewing the sanctuary and supporting spaces, and in May 2013 the church was rededicated at a Mass presided over by Archbishop Andrew Yeom Soo-jung. In 2017, for the thirty-fifth anniversary, a pipe organ was blessed. These stages show that the parish's history was not completed with a single building project but continued as the community renewed its worship and pastoral environment. The rededication was not merely a repair project; it preserved the memories accumulated since the foundation while preparing the church for the next generation. The changing church building thus gives visible form to a community that has remained rooted in the same neighborhood across generations.
