About this place

Sinwol 1-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Yangcheon District of the Archdiocese of Seoul, serving Catholics in the Sinwol-dong area of Yangcheon-gu. It was established on September 22, 2005, and its patronal dedication is to Mary, Mother of God. Located near Gomdallae-ro, the church serves as a local pastoral center where parishioners participate in Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, small communities, devotional life, and service close to their homes.

The parish emerged during a period when the Archdiocese of Seoul was experimenting with collaborative pastoral structures and subdividing very large parishes into smaller communities more closely tied to everyday living areas. As pastoral organization in the Hwagok area was reorganized, Sinwol 1-dong became an independent parish and gradually developed its own liturgical and pastoral structure. Parish anniversary reflections have repeatedly emphasized unity and peace, and preparations for the twentieth anniversary also stressed becoming a self-sustaining and organically connected community. Sinwol 1-dong Parish therefore preserves both the memory of the Archdiocese's neighborhood-centered pastoral experiments of the 2000s and the continuing growth of its own local community.

History & origins

Sinwol 1-dong Catholic Church emerged in 2005, when the Archdiocese of Seoul was expanding collaborative pastoral arrangements intended to reduce the burden on very large parishes and bring priests and parish communities closer to Catholics' daily lives. Contemporary reports and the history of a neighboring parish record that Hwagokbon-dong, Hwagok 6-dong, and Sinwol 1-dong were reorganized within a collaborative pastoral structure. The history of Balsan-dong Parish also records the division involving Hwagok 6-dong and Sinwol 1-dong in October 2005, confirming that the new community arose during a wider restructuring of pastoral care in western Seoul.

The parish's own materials consistently identify September 22, 2005, as its foundation date. Dedicated to Mary, Mother of God, the new community provided Catholics in the Sinwol-dong living area with a closer center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Reliable public sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of the earliest construction stages, so it is safer not to infer exact dates for building work. What can be established is that the community developed its liturgical and pastoral organization after foundation and settled as an independent parish.

Parish anniversaries have since become occasions to renew the community's identity. In 2022, for the seventeenth anniversary, parishioners were invited to a novena for unity and peace. A 2023 pastoral statement likewise emphasized liturgy, Eucharistic devotion, and the reorganization of parish structures while looking ahead to the twentieth anniversary in 2025. These records show that the history of Sinwol 1-dong is not merely an administrative act of separation but the continued formation of a self-supporting Catholic community. The parish thus retains the memory of the Archdiocese's collaborative-pastoral experiment while developing its own stable local identity.
