About this place

Sindorim-dong Catholic Church is a parish community serving the Sindorim-dong living area in the Guro part of the Archdiocese of Seoul. It was separated from Gurobon-dong Parish in 2002, and its patron is St. John the Baptist. Located near Gyeongin-ro in a dense residential and transportation hub, the parish provides a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, small communities, devotional life, and service so that Catholics can sustain their faith close to home.

The parish arose from the rapid urbanization and apartment development of Sindorim, which created a need for a new pastoral base. The mother parish secured church land in advance, after which the new parish was formally established and moved from its first Mass through temporary worship locations to a church of its own. As the district continued to change, the parish also improved its church and ancillary facilities. Sindorim-dong Parish is therefore a distinctly urban parish formed at the intersection of major transport and residential development, providing continuity of worship and community life in a rapidly changing neighborhood. Its long service to the same living area remains an important part of its identity.

History & origins

Preparation for Sindorim-dong Catholic Church began before the parish itself was established. According to its official chronology, Gurobon-dong Parish purchased a church site in Sindorim-dong on June 30, 2000, laying the physical foundation for a future community. The Archdiocese of Seoul established Sindorim-dong Parish on February 21, 2002. Its first priest arrived in early March, and the first Mass was celebrated on the church site on March 10. Because no permanent church yet existed, the community used temporary facilities, including the Guro 2-dong education center, while beginning its liturgical and pastoral life.

Construction of the church began in June of the same year, while the new parish simultaneously developed its community organization. The official history records the dedication of the new church on September 8, 2002. The speed with which parish establishment, the first Mass, temporary worship, construction, and dedication followed one another is a distinctive feature of its early history. It reflects the urgent pastoral need created by large-scale residential development and population growth in Sindorim at the time.

Sindorim continued to change around apartment complexes and major transport facilities, and the parish responded by improving its pastoral spaces. Further construction and administrative work concerning the church and ancillary facilities took place in the late 2010s. The parish's history is therefore an example of an urban church in which the mother parish first secured land, a new community was established, and parishioners quickly created both worship space and a stable organization. The present parish continues liturgy, formation, fellowship, and service on that foundation. Significantly, it did not begin with a completed complex: land acquisition, temporary worship, and construction came in sequence, making the effort of the founding community especially visible.
