History & origins

The roots of Sindang-dong Catholic Church took shape after Korea's liberation, when the Catholic population increased in territory then served by Myeongdong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that a mission station was established in a Catholic household in Sindang-dong in September 1948 and was elevated to parish status in early March 1949. A current Catholic directory gives December 22, 1948, as the foundation date. Although the exact administrative date differs, the sources clearly show that preparations intensified in the second half of 1948 and that an independent parish structure was in place by early 1949. Its original territory reached as far as Wangsimni, Geumho-dong, Ttukseom, and Cheonho-dong.

The first church used a converted building in Jangchung-dong, but it was struck by shelling during the Korean War and became unusable. The community moved through several temporary locations before acquiring land and a building in the area of the present church in 1953. Construction of a new church began in July 1955, and it was completed and dedicated on February 26, 1956. The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres arrived in 1957. Continued growth then led to the separation of Cheonho-dong Parish in 1958, Wangsimni Parish in 1959, and Geumho-dong Parish in 1962, showing the wide pastoral role once exercised by Sindang-dong.

Structural cracks later made another rebuilding necessary. Construction began in May 1970, and a new church was completed on September 12, 1971; this building continues as the center of the parish today. The community subsequently expanded education, devotional life, and local evangelization and also undertook projects to record its own history. Sindang-dong's story can be summarized as a mission community that became a parish, lost its worship space during war, rebuilt itself, and then gave rise to several daughter parishes as Seoul expanded eastward. The present church preserves the accumulated memory of that turbulent but resilient history.
