History & origins

Sindaebang-dong Catholic Church was established in 1995 in response to the growth of the Catholic population and the need for more localized pastoral care in Sindaebang-dong, Dongjak-gu. The parish's official chronology gives September 6, 1995, as its foundation date, and the history of Sangdo-dong Parish likewise records that 223 households and 775 Catholics from Sangdo 3-dong were transferred to the newly established parish that day. Daebang-dong Parish gives September 20 as the separation date, indicating a difference in how stages of the administrative process were recorded, but all sources agree that the new community emerged in September 1995 from several neighboring parishes.

The new parish celebrated its first Mass on September 24 and completed a tent church in November, beginning regular liturgical and pastoral life before a permanent building existed. In 1998 the community moved to a temporary building while preparing its church, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 19. Construction continued into the following year; the parish entered the new church on June 26, 1999, and Archbishop Nicholas Cheong presided over its dedication on August 22. Thus a community that began under canvas obtained a permanent church within about four years.

Once the church was established, the parish continued to broaden its pastoral foundation rather than treating construction as the end of its development. A senior college began in 2003, and later fellowship spaces and counseling ministries were added in response to changing local needs. The parish marked its thirtieth anniversary in 2025, providing an occasion to remember its beginnings. Its history reflects both the Archdiocese of Seoul's 1990s policy of forming more neighborhood-based parishes and the concrete effort of local Catholics who moved from temporary worship space to a permanent church and then expanded ministries of formation, fellowship, and care.
