About this place

Siheung-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul that has long served Catholics in the Siheung-dong area of Geumcheon-gu. The current Catholic directory records its establishment as a parish in 1971, and its patron is the Holy Trinity. Located on Siheung-daero 38-gil, the church is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It also played an important role in the growth of the Catholic Church in Geumcheon as neighboring communities, including Siheung 4-dong, later separated from it.

The Catholic roots of the area go much farther back than the parish's formal establishment, reaching mission-station activity in the early twentieth century. Through changes of parish jurisdiction, urban development, war, flooding, and social change, local Catholics continued their faith in small gatherings and mission communities. After a church was secured in 1970, the community became an independent parish the following year. Siheung-dong is therefore both a present-day local parish and a place that preserves the memory of a long process of evangelization and community formation in Geumcheon and Siheung. This long continuity also makes the current church an important point in the local Catholic history of Geumcheon. The Holy Trinity symbolizes the spiritual identity of a parish in which Catholics from different periods and residential communities have become one body.

History & origins

The roots of Siheung-dong Catholic Church can be traced to the Garibong mission station of Yakhyeon Parish around 1901, when only a small number of Catholics lived in the area. The mission community continued under changing parish jurisdictions through the following decades, connected at different times with parishes such as Dorim-dong. Urban planning and local changes eventually led to the closure of the mission station for a period. In the late 1960s, however, the arrival of flood-displaced families and new residents increased the local population, and former mission leaders again gathered a community of roughly seventy Catholics and began working toward a church of their own.

The effort to build a church became concrete in 1969. Land was acquired in May 1970, and a church of about forty-eight pyeong was completed that December. Once a rectory had been prepared in September 1971, the community was elevated from mission status to an independent parish. The current Catholic directory gives September 17, 1971 as the foundation date. With the Holy Trinity as its patron, the parish gradually developed a fuller pastoral structure, including collaboration with women religious, a parish bulletin, a pastoral council, and scholarship activity.

As the local population continued to grow, Siheung-dong itself later divided its territory. It established the Siheung 4-dong mission station in January 1994, and that community became an independent parish in March 1995. In 1996 Siheung-dong marked its twenty-fifth anniversary, and the following year a twenty-five-year parish history was published. The broad sequence—from an early twentieth-century mission, through the revived community of the late 1960s, the 1971 parish foundation, and later the creation of a daughter parish—shows how Siheung-dong grew alongside the changing urban landscape of Geumcheon. The fact that the mission once disappeared and then revived through the voluntary gatherings of local Catholics also shows how the continuity of the parish's history was sustained by lived faith before formal structures were restored.
