About this place

Siheung 4-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul serving the Catholic community in Siheung-dong, Geumcheon-gu. It began as a mission station in 1994 and was elevated to an independent parish in 1995, with Christ the King as its patron. Located on Doksan-ro 36-gil, the church is a center for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, neighborhood communities, devotional life, and service in the Siheung 4-dong area.

The parish was formed by dividing the broad territory of Siheung-dong Parish so that pastoral care could be provided closer to local residents. Since becoming independent, it has continued to improve not only its worship space but also facilities for formation and fellowship. In 2017 a new education building and a cross sculpture incorporating Eucharistic symbolism were blessed; the crown in the artwork refers to Christ the King, the parish patron. Activities for children, older adults, and neighbors also show the church's role as both a worshiping community and a local network of care. The fact that it grew from a mission station into a parish clearly expresses its close connection to the neighborhood from the beginning.

History & origins

Siheung 4-dong Catholic Church developed as the territory of Siheung-dong Parish was subdivided in response to growing Catholic numbers and more distinct residential areas. The Catholic Encyclopedia records that the Siheung 4-dong mission station was established in January 1994. It provided a closer place for Catholics within the mother parish to celebrate faith and build community. About a year later, on March 3, 1995, the mission was elevated to an independent parish, and Catholics were transferred from Siheung-dong to form the new local community.

The parish took Christ the King as its patron and gradually established its liturgical life, catechesis, and neighborhood communities in Siheung 4-dong. As time passed, facilities for education and gatherings were expanded. In 2017 a new education building was completed, and in June that year it and a cross sculpture depicting Eucharistic symbolism were blessed. The crown represented in the artwork refers to Christ the King, linking church art and architecture to the community's patronal identity.

The parish's history illustrates a common pastoral process in the Archdiocese: first establishing a mission station within a large parish territory and then, once the community had become stable, raising it to parish status. From the 1994 mission to the 1995 parish and later expansion of educational facilities, Siheung 4-dong has broadened its foundations for formation, fellowship, and service alongside worship. Its community today continues the neighborhood-centered faith and care that characterized its gradual development. Christ the King has remained a clear spiritual center throughout this growth, and the symbolism was given a visible expression again in the 2017 artwork. The memory of the mission-station period remains the starting point for understanding the parish's close relationship with its neighborhood.
