성산동 성당

History & origins

Seongsan-dong parish was established on August 21, 1981, after being separated from Yanghwajin parish, today's Seogyo-dong parish. Church records state that the new community began with about 2,528 Catholics, responding to the rapid residential growth of the Seongsan area. The 103 Korean Martyr Saints were chosen as patrons, helping shape the spiritual identity of the new parish.

After obtaining land, the parish held a groundbreaking ceremony on August 15, 1983, presided over by Bishop Gyeong Gap-ryong. During construction, however, major flooding struck Seoul in 1984. Parishioners decided to donate three years of church-building funds to flood victims. The project was delayed, but the community raised funds again and continued construction. In May 1986, the new church was blessed at a Mass presided over by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan.

By the late 1990s, growth in Seongsan 2-dong created a need for another pastoral unit. A Seongsan 2-dong mission station was established in May 1999 and developed into an independent parish the following year. Seongsan-dong, which had itself been formed by division from Yanghwajin, thus became a mother parish that helped another local community grow toward independence.

The history of Seongsan-dong Church is therefore more than a sequence of administrative division and construction. The choice to give building funds to flood victims and the later support of a new community show a pattern of placing people and communion before buildings. The flood-relief decision in particular became a value-laden memory that later generations of the parish could inherit alongside devotion to the 103 Korean Martyr Saints.
