History & origins

The history of St. Raphael Saranggyeol Quasi-Parish reaches back to the Seoul Catholic Mission for the Blind, organized in 1979. A community formed where visually impaired Catholics could pray together, learn the faith, and support one another, developing pastoral care and fellowship suited to their circumstances beyond the territorial boundaries of ordinary parishes. It grew not merely as a welfare organization but as a Catholic faith community for people with visual disabilities, taking St. Raphael as patron and incorporating themes of healing and accompaniment into its identity.

After many years of this activity, the Archdiocese of Seoul established the community as a quasi-parish on February 9, 2011. The current Korean Catholic directory records the same establishment date and the name “St. Raphael Saranggyeol.” Its base is at the Hasang Welfare Center for Persons with Disabilities in Gaepo-dong, where liturgy and community gatherings provide a stable framework for church life. This development is significant because a specialized disability ministry received an institutional place within the archdiocese as a distinct faith community.

The community has continued to emphasize mutual care and participation after becoming a quasi-parish. Catholic reporting in 2024 described a visually impaired member using professional skills to serve other members of the community, illustrating that participants are not simply recipients of assistance but people who serve one another. The history of St. Raphael Saranggyeol can thus be summarized as a journey from the 1979 mission to the 2011 quasi-parish, continually creating space for liturgy, fellowship, and service so that disability does not become a barrier to full participation in church community life. This development can also be seen as an example of specialized pastoral ministry becoming part of the archdiocese’s formal community structure rather than remaining a peripheral activity. The core of the history is that a small mission arising from the actual needs of visually impaired Catholics accumulated relationships and mutual support over decades and became a quasi-parish.
