History & origins

The roots of Seongnae-dong Parish are connected with the growth of Cheonho-dong Parish, which once served a broad area east of the Han River. From the late 1970s, large-scale residential development and rapid population growth in the Gangdong and Songpa areas also brought significant growth to the local Catholic community. Historical Catholic sources record that in 1987 preparations began to create a new pastoral base for the Pungnap and Seongnae areas. In 1988 a commercial space in Seongnae-dong was rented for the celebration of Mass, giving local Catholics a nearby foundation for community life.

This movement first bore fruit in the establishment of Pungnap-dong Parish in 1989. Seongnae-dong then continued under Pungnap-dong Parish, but preparations for a separate parish developed as the local community kept growing. In January 2001 Pungnap-dong Parish purchased land in the Seongnae-dong 527 area as a base for a future parish. That acquisition became a direct preparatory step toward the independence of the Seongnae Catholic community.

The Archdiocese of Seoul established Seongnae-dong Parish in September 2002 and transferred the Seongnae 1- and 2-dong territories formerly served by Pungnap-dong to the new parish. The current Korean Catholic directory gives the establishment date as September 19, 2002. A community that had been gathering in its own local Mass setting since the late 1980s thus received the full structure of an independent parish. The history of Seongnae-dong Parish illustrates how the Church in eastern Seoul responded to rapid urban growth by dividing broad parish territories and creating pastoral communities closer to local Catholics. Seongnae-dong did not begin as an independent parish from the outset; it became self-supporting step by step through local Catholic gatherings and a temporary Mass space within a larger parish territory. The present parish therefore represents more than a building: it is the result of a community-formation process in which pastoral units were adapted to a changing urban neighborhood.
