History & origins

Seongbuk-dong House of Prayer opened in 2010. According to archdiocesan Church reporting, it was created to provide students and graduates of the Catholic Catechetical Institute with a place for prayer and gathering. The building, with a basement and four floors above ground, included a chapel, lodging rooms, seminar rooms, and common spaces. From the beginning, it was conceived not simply as an education building but as a place combining prayer, continuing formation, and community life.

After opening, the house came to be used by a wider range of Catholics for retreats and meetings. In 2013, a monthly open retreat called “Oettan-got,” or “a secluded place,” was held there, offering a way to spend a short period in silence and reflection within Seoul. Facility information also describes the house as an urban retreat venue suitable for Eucharistic adoration, group retreats, day retreats, and overnight stays.

Its mode of operation and range of uses broadened over time. Volunteers took part in caring for the place and supporting gatherings, while the lecture rooms, lodging, and chapel continued to link formation with prayer. In this sense, the name “House of Prayer” refers to more than accommodation; it expresses a place for faith formation and communal rest.

In 2025, “Space Seongbuk,” an exhibition space for Catholic artists, opened on the first floor, adding a cultural-mission role. A house that began primarily with prayer and catechetical formation thus expanded to include evangelical communication through art. Its history since 2010 can be seen as the gradual combination of urban retreat, education, community, and culture while preserving the original purpose of the house.
