History & origins

St. Imbert Center is a relatively recent facility created by the Archdiocese of Seoul as a dedicated place for retreats and spiritual renewal. It was developed at the foot of Bukhansan in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, and formally entered service as an archdiocesan retreat center after a blessing presided over by Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung on December 18, 2019. Catholic reporting at the time presented it as a place where believers could rest in a natural setting, pray, and renew their spiritual strength. Its starting point is distinctive because it was established specifically for retreat and spirituality ministry rather than emerging from a parish or a religious institute.

After its opening, the center became part of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s network of education and retreat facilities. The current Korean Catholic directory lists St. Imbert Center at 35 Yeonseo-ro 46-gil as an education and retreat house. Its practical use in archdiocesan programs is also documented: youth ministry in Seoul has used the center for retreats and stages of youth selection and formation. This continuity shows that the original purpose of providing a place for spiritual renewal has been carried forward within the archdiocese’s formation ministry.

Unlike an old parish, the center does not have a long chronology of territorial divisions or successive church buildings. The verifiable core of its history is the preparation and blessing of the facility in 2019 and its continuing use as a retreat and formation space of the Archdiocese of Seoul. Its historical significance therefore lies less in age than in the archdiocese’s decision to create a dedicated place within metropolitan Seoul where Catholics and pastoral communities can concentrate on prayer, reflection, and discernment. The fact that the documentary record is concentrated in the recent period is also important when interpreting the site. Rather than attaching older traditions that are not documented for the center, focusing on its verified 2019 opening and actual use in archdiocesan programs most clearly shows why St. Imbert Center was created and how it functions today.
