History & origins

Seokgwan-dong Parish was established amid rapid residential expansion and growth in the Catholic population of northeastern Seoul during the 1970s. Both the Korean Catholic Directory and the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism record that the parish was created on March 15, 1978, from territory belonging to Imun-dong and Jangwi-dong parishes. It began with about 1,320 Catholics. The history of Jangwi-dong Parish likewise confirms that the growth of the local population in the late 1970s led to the separation of the Seokgwan-dong community, showing that the creation of the parish was a pastoral response to expanding residential areas rather than simply a change of name or administration.

The new community grew rapidly after its establishment. According to historical statistics in the Catholic encyclopedia, the Catholic population increased to 3,581 in 1981, 5,920 in 1985, and 8,737 in 1989. Growth by several times within roughly a decade reflects the speed of urbanization in Seokgwan-dong and the surrounding area. Once the community became independent, it needed to develop its own liturgical life, formation, devotional associations, and parish organization, and the parish became a center for holding together a rapidly expanding local Catholic population.

Reliable public sources do not preserve enough detail to reconstruct the full early building history of the church, so it is safer not to add uncertain completion dates or facility changes. What is firmly documented is the 1978 establishment and the very rapid growth of the 1980s. The history of Seokgwan-dong shows how the parish network of northeastern Seoul became denser as growing territories of older parishes such as Imun-dong and Jangwi-dong were divided to form new communities. The present church continues the Catholic community that took root in that period of urban expansion. Comparing the size of the parish at foundation with the Catholic population at the end of the 1980s shows that creating the new parish anticipated the rapid population growth that followed.
