About this place

The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill maintain “Mother Seton House” in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul. Inspired by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and Saint Vincent de Paul, the congregation practices charity and service, with a particular commitment to educational and social apostolates among the poor, the sick, and people on the margins.

The current church directory lists Mother Seton House in Seongbuk-dong as a community of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill under the Archdiocese of Seoul. The congregation's history of maintaining an educational and spiritual presence in Seongbuk-dong since the 1970s is an important background to the character of this place.

History & origins

The roots of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill lie in the community begun by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Maryland in 1809 for the education of poor children and works of charity. At the invitation of Bishop Harold Henry of the Gwangju Vicariate, four sisters arrived in Mokpo on November 3, 1960, and moved to Gangjin in 1961, where their educational apostolate took fuller shape.

In 1974 the sisters established the “Seton House of Education” in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul. In 1979 the Korean name of the congregation changed from Seton Caritas Sisters to the present Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, and in 1986 the Korean motherhouse and novitiate were transferred to Bonchon-dong, Gwangju. Today “Mother Seton House” remains registered in Seongbuk-dong, continuing the congregation's long connection with this part of Seoul.
