The Missionaries of Charity Brothers are a men's religious community whose current Seoul monastery is located in Samseon-dong, Seongbuk-gu. Their central mission is to share a poor way of life with the poorest and most abandoned and to make God's love present through service.
The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists the Samseon-dong community as the congregation's Seoul monastery under the Archdiocese of Seoul. The place is closely connected with the brothers' long history in Korea of living and serving among people in poverty.
History & origins
The Missionaries of Charity Brothers began in Calcutta on March 25, 1963, through Mother Teresa. Brother Andrew later became co-founder and first superior and played a major role in shaping the brothers into an organizationally distinct congregation. Their mission to Korea was decided after Brother Andrew visited in 1976, and the first two brothers entered Korea on July 5, 1977.
After a temporary stay at the Jesuit residence of Sogang University, they established a community in Samseon-dong, Seongbuk-gu, on July 20, 1977. In 1998 the Korean provincial headquarters then located there was moved to Sinyeong-dong, while the former Samseon premises were used as bathing and shelter facilities for homeless people. The current church directory again identifies a Missionaries of Charity Brothers “Seoul Monastery” in Samseon-dong.
