History & origins

Sanggye 2-dong Parish was born during a period when population growth and the subdivision of parishes were proceeding rapidly in the Nowon area. Both the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism and the current Catholic directory record that it was established on September 24, 1992, from territory belonging to Sanggye-dong and Junggye-dong parishes. Historical statistics in the encyclopedia show growth from 2,756 Catholics in the year of establishment to 6,195 in 1996, illustrating how quickly the new community expanded.

As the community grew, the need for a permanent church also increased. Catholic press records of the dedication state that construction of the new church began in January 2005 and, after several years of work, the building was dedicated on April 27, 2008, with Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk presiding. Roughly fifteen years after the parish was founded, this became a decisive step in securing a lasting center for worship and parish life.

The history of Sanggye 2-dong shows a broader pattern in northeastern Seoul: older parishes expanded with urban development, gave rise to new communities, and those communities in turn built their own churches and took root. With St. Francis of Assisi as its patron from the beginning, the parish established a stable setting for the liturgical life, faith formation, and fellowship of local Catholics. The rapid increase in Catholics after the parish was founded contrasted with the much longer process required to secure a new church. Construction did not begin until 2005, about thirteen years after the parish’s establishment, showing that community growth and the creation of a stable liturgical home proceeded at different speeds. The 2008 dedication therefore marked more than the completion of a building: it signified that the community created by parish subdivision had, after years of preparation, secured a lasting center for its own parish life.
