History & origins

The origins of Sangbong-dong Parish can be traced to around 1930, when Catholics came to the Sinnae-ri area in search of work at a pottery business. To care for this community, Hyehwa-dong Parish established the Sinnae-ri mission station, also known as the Piul mission station, in 1936. The mission station continued even as its parish affiliation shifted among Jegi-dong, Cheongnyangni, and Imun-dong, and in 1956 the local Catholics secured land and prepared a small hall.

In the late 1960s, the Missionary Society of St. Columban promoted the establishment of a parish in the area, purchasing the present site in 1969 and beginning church construction in 1970. On November 6 that year, Sinnae-ri mission station was raised to Sangbong-dong Parish. The new church was completed in December and dedicated the following year. Rapid population growth associated with housing development soon led to the separation of Junggok-dong in 1973, Guri and Myeonmok-dong in 1974, and Muk-dong in 1975.

After pastoral responsibility was transferred to the Archdiocese of Seoul in 1976, the parish broadened its neighborhood involvement. The Sangbong Credit Union was founded in 1977, and facilities such as a convent and meeting spaces followed. Sinnae-dong Parish was separated in 1992, and in 1993 the parish opened the “House of St. Vincent” for elderly people without family support. Mangu-dong Parish was separated in 1997, continuing the adjustment of parish boundaries to demographic change in northeastern Seoul.

This long development shows how Sangbong-dong grew from a small mission station into a large urban parish and then helped give rise to new parishes and neighborhood organizations of its own. The present church continues the lineage of a local Catholic community whose roots reach back to the 1930s despite repeated subdivision and change. This continuity makes clear that the present parish did not appear suddenly in 1970 but was built on decades of experience as a mission-station community.
